GREATER MILWAUKEE ROSE SOCIETY
Frequently Asked Questions
When do I start getting roses uncovered in spring?
- Start when the forsythia is blooming.
What should I do to get roses going in spring?
- As the days warm up, begin to remove any leaves and debris from the garden. If you have used a form of winter protection, work over the course of a week or two to remove it. Remember, our weather takes us from one extreme to another in spring.
- Cut back canes ‘til you see good white wood. Remove canes that will not easily support new growth.
- Do not feed until you have fully developed leaves on the plant. The soil will not be warm enough to activate the fertilizer and the plant cannot process the “food” until it has well developed leaves.
